Presentation: Compassionate Care for Consensual Non-Monogamous Relationships: A Primer

Description:
Nearly 11% of respondents in a recent study report being in a polyamorous relationship at some point in their lives (Moors, et al., 2021). While at least one in nine people has been part of a relationship that is consensually non-monogamous, being openly so subjects one to stigmatization and discrimination. Unfortunately, these negative experiences are often at the hands of psychotherapists. There is a strong monogamy bias in psychotherapy training, theories, and clinical approaches, which by implication view any other consensual expressions of love, relationship, or sexuality as other, or deviant. This workshop seeks to introduce participants to what consensual non-monogamy is and the ways it is expressed in adult relationships. Through conversation, instruction, and an exploration of case examples, attendees will explore ways of working with consensually non-monogamous clients, and discover—and learn to avoid—the ways that people in consensually non-monogamous relationships experience harm in the therapy room.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand what consensual non-monogamy is and the various ways it is expressed in adult relationships.
  2. Participants will understand some of the common misconceptions about consensual non-monogamy and will learn to identify ways in which people in consensually non-monogamous relationships are marginalized in the therapy room and in society.
  3. Participants will learn ways to work with people in consensually non-monogamous relationships who experience jealousy.
  4. Participants will learn to apply common relational therapy approaches to working with people in consensually non-monogamous relationships.
  5. Attendees will apply the ideas learned in this workshop to case vignettes and will participate in a conversation about these cases.
