Category: Events

The Texas Student Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (TSAMFT) would like to invite you to hear our guest speaker, Dr. Bucky McKenzie, discuss ways to use gender-neutral language in academic writing. This virtual event will take place via Zoom on September 18th at 9:00 am Central.  Additionally, you are encouraged to attend the general meeting of TSAMFT taking place at 8 a.m. that same day using the same Zoom link.

In the seventh edition of its publication manual, the American Psychological Association emphasizes the need to talk about all people with inclusivity and respect. "Writers using APA Style must strive to use language that is free of bias and avoid perpetuating prejudicial beliefs or demeaning attitudes in their writing (APA, 2021)." Dr. McKenzie’s presentation will cover how to best address the gender-neutral language required by the APA 7th edition to include demystifying and incorporating gender-neutral language into all of our writing, including dissertations along with recommendations on how to properly use alternate pronouns such as they/them/their and ze/zir/zim.

Dr. Bucky McKenzie is a Curriculum Specialist at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. He's Chair of the WSU President’s Commission on Gender Identity/Expression & Sexual Orientation, the Secretary of the Gender Resource Alliance of the Inland Northwest, and a transgender advocate. Dr. McKenzie is deeply passionate about Queer rights, healthcare (including access to healthcare), serving others, encouraging others, and all work related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Reference: APA. (2021). Bias-free language.
