Hey Students! My name is Paul Stanford and I'm one of your TAMFT board members. It's been awhile since I was a student, but I wanted to let you all know that I'm happy to answer any questions I can if needed. I'm happy to serve you, the student members, as you are the future of our great organization and our field! I'll definitely glance at this board from time to time to see if I can be of help, but feel free to email me directly as well if you have any questions specifically for me: [email protected].

I look forward to meeting many of you at the conference and other events!

Dr. Paul,

My name is Jesus Ramon and I plan to graduate this December. I would like to learn on how to study for the LMFT as well as to register. I have gone to the state website and I am overwhelmed with so much information but I am able to have the guidance who can mentor me it would be great. I love working with youth at risk with their families. I am looking forward to go to the conference to network with other therapist so that I am able to learn from.

Jesus,

I've been out of the licensing exam and LMFT-Associate application game for some time, but I do know that Family Solutions Institute is widely used and recommended: https://familysolutionsinstitute.com/

I'll also direct others to hop on and give you their words of wisdom. I'd definitely love to get to meet you at the conference. Congrats on entering the great field of MFT!

Hi Jesus!

I'll be taking the licensing exam in a few months, so take what I say with a grain of salt--I haven't taken it yet! But I'm using the Family Solutions Institute's green book and audio cds. I'm also using Diane Gerhart's Family Therapy book and the AMFTRB (https://amftrb.org/your-exam-roadmap/#practice) “Practice exam." I'm about to register, and the website does seem overwhelming, so I feel similarly! Good luck navigating the website and studying for the exam!

Hello! I am a current student of Capella University’s online Marriage and Family Program. I am scheduled to start my practicum and internship in January 2021. If everything goes as planned, I will graduate in December 2021. I plan to take the national exam as soon as possible- either the quarter before graduation or fairly quickly after. I am hosting bi-weekly study sessions for the material content of the exam with fellow learners I have in classes and weekly practice sessions with classmates to become more comfortable as a therapist. The university has provided me with the big green book and I am curious if other study materials are needed (there’s been several types posted on Facebook groups.). I have also seen that it takes people more than once to actually pass- so I’m a bit concerned and anxious about that. I am excited to big networking and socializing with professionals in the field! Thanks!

Hello everyone,
My name is Ayo Akinola. I'm from Houston, Texas and my school is Lamar-University.I began my own journey this January 2020. None of us plan for covid-19, but here we are. Currently I'm doing well in my classes. My proposed graduation date is May 2022.I'm a professional nurse with advanced degree in Theology-(hospital chaplain). So I brought with me maturity and life's experiences to the profession/organization. I'm a mother and a grandmother.
For those sisters and brothers preparing for their exams,I wish you all the best.God have you in the palm of his hands--trust him and he will crown all your labor with success. I waited until all the kids left the house,so I'm doing it now my way--pressure yes but according to one of my professors is workable. (Laugh). Peace everybody and goodluck to those taking the exam in near future. Thanks. Ayo

Hello everyone!

My name is Markesha Bonner and I am a new student (May 2020) in the MAMFT program at Northcentral University. I currently reside in West Columbia, TX and work for Fort Bend ISD (Missouri City, TX). I decided to return to school in the midst of the pandemic in an effort to bring forth a positive turning point to the year. I've always wanted to pursue MFT but i felt that i would be too overwhelmedand not be able to focus on my studies the way that i should. So far I absolutely love it! When I started I was working from home due to the schools being closed but now, we have gone back into the office. Luckily things are still slow, so I am really getting the opportunity to adjust to being a grad school student and employed full time. I am looking forward to connecting with other students or practicing LMFT/MFTs along my journey. My only concern for now is finding a Supervisor that will be a good fit for me in my area. I have 2 more classes to take before I have to have a Supervisor secured so I am looking now. Any suggestions that you all may have are greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Markesha

Markesha,

Welcome to the board and to the MFT field! I'd highly suggest utilizing our Supervisor Search feature here on TAMFT: https://tamft.memberclicks.net/supervisor-search#/

Additionally, you can find other resources for students on this page: https://tamft.memberclicks.net/for-students

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Hello,

My name is Marianne. I live in Dallas, Texas. I'm a student at NCU in the MFT program. I started in January 2020. The most challenging thing for me has been learning to balance school and work. I'm excited to be in this program, I look forward to becoming an LMFT. I would like to connect with any student in the DFW area to maybe exchange ideas or talk over assignments.
